Biomedical science examines medical samples, interprets laboratory measurements and establishes a connection between laboratory diagnostic results and clinical pictures. Biomedical scientists have a variety of methods and innovative technologies at their disposal to measure different values and functions such as blood parameters or lung function. You apply them in complex laboratory analysis processes and evaluate them. In addition to intensive laboratory work you also interact with patients, for example when taking samples or performing clinical diagnostics. The practically oriented degree program combines technological know-how with quality and process management. You will be educated in the core disciplines of histology, hematology, microbiology and clinical chemistry.

The most important criteria is that you are interested in science and medicine. You are open to innovative technologies and automation, in other words you enjoy using high-tech equipment and developing an understanding of how they work. You can imagine working in a laboratory where you can apply your manual dexterity. You want to interact with patients directly. You approach problems in a structured, analytical and organized manner. This programme is held in German.
Thanks to the state-of-the-art infrastructure, you will gain valuable practical experience during your classes.
A practical learning phase abroad offers the opportunity to broaden your horizons and gain new impressions.
Numerous disciplines at one location: participate in research projects and learn from others.
The provisions of FHStG §4 regarding admission requirements apply.
The fluency of the German language (competence level C1 according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages) is a prerequisite for all applicants.
Higher education entrance qualification:
General university entrance qualification or equivalent foreign certificate
In the case of foreign certificates, the Rector' s Office will assess their equivalence. If supplementary examinations are required, the relevant certificates must be submitted prior to commencement of the studies.
University entrance examination (Berufsreifeprüfung, Studienberechtigungsprüfung)
The following compulsory subjects of a university entrance examination as well as an essay on a general topic (in German) are required for admission to this degree program (according to §64a UG 2002):
- Biology and environmental science
- Chemistry 2
- English 2
- Mathematics 1
- Physics 1
The university entrance examination (Studienberechtigungsprüfung) must include a combination of at least three of the listed subjects.
English 2 (equivalent to proficiency level B2) must in any case be proven by an examination.
In case of deviations in the combination of subjects, the head of the degree program decides.
Relevant professional qualification
The completion of the following training courses is defined as a relevant professional qualification.
For all relevant professional qualifications, the additional examination English 2 (equivalent to competence level B2) is required. Additional examinations must be taken prior to starting the program, and in any case before entering the second year of study.
Completion of similar intermediate vocational schools will be approved after review by the head of the degree program.
After being accepted, you must provide the following proof of your suitability:
- First aid training: First aid certificate from the Austrian Red Cross or an equivalent institution at least 16 hours (within the last two years)
- Proof of good standing (Current extract of your police record - not older than 3 months)
- Medical certificate of good health that includes all the relevant health parameters for your education as a biomedical scientist (not older than 3 months)
- Hepatitis B vaccination (at least the first of the two part vaccination)
To apply, you will need the signed application form as well as a copy of the following documents:
Please note:
It is not possible to save incomplete online applications. You must complete your application in one session. Your application will be valid as soon as you upload all of the required documents and certificates. In the event that some documents (e.g. transcripts) are not available at the time you apply, you may submit these later via email, mail or in person as soon as possible.
The admission procedure consists of a computer-assisted test and an interview.
Applicants who have achieved the minimum level on the test will then undergo an admission interview. Please bring the required original documents with you to the interview. The admission interview provides a first impression of the applicant's personal suitability. This includes professional motivation, professional understanding, performance, problem-solving skills and a capacity for careful consideration.
The dates for the admission tests are are12th March 2024, 2th April, 9th April or 16th April 2024
Assignment to the test dates will be made by the program. You will receive information in a timely manner.
The FH Campus Wien is characterised by extensive expertise and a large network. FH Campus Wien is the only university of applied sciences in Austria to train all seven legally regulated upper-level medical-therapeutic-diagnostic professions as well as midwifery. An important partner in the areas of education, research and development is the Vienna Healthcare Association. We also work closely with the Biomed Austria Professional Association. Specialist events such as the Annual Conference of Biomedical Analysts take place regularly in our company. At our attractive main location, you also benefit from our modern infrastructure, which includes L2 laboratories(security level 2 laboratories). Furthermore, you have the opportunity to join a professional community across disciplines. There is great potential in research projects at the interface between health and technology and practical relevance is guaranteed when we organise one of our freely accessible lecture evenings with top-class experts as part of the Campus Lectures.
The degree program is practically oriented and combines comprehensive medical-technical and communicative expertise with the requirements for modern quality and process management. In a guaranteed, state-of-the-art laboratory space as well as through extensive internships, you will learn the core disciplines of hematology, histology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology and molecular biology. Hematology focuses on the detailed examination of blood and bone marrow.
In histology you will learn about tissue and cytology cells. In microbiology, you learn for example how throat cultures are examined for bacteria, fungi or viruses. In clinical chemistry you will primarily experiment with serum and other bodily fluids that you will analyze for metabolites, enzymes, vitamins or tumor markers. In immunology you will for example search for defects in the immune system and test for allergies or other intolerances.
Times
Mon to Fri, all day if necessary Saturday
In order to enable all students to gain the necessary practical experience and thus to complete their studies within the regular period of study, there may be practical learning phases during the summer months if required. Four vacation weeks in July or August are planned in any case.
Electives
Selection and participation according to available places. There may be separate selection procedures.
As a graduate of this program, a wide range of occupational fields and career opportunities are open to you. Find out here where your path can take you.
With this degree you will be qualified to practice the profession of biomedical scientist. The MTD Act is the basis for this degree program. According to the MTD Act, numerous activities may only be performed by members of the biomedical science profession. For you this means that you are guaranteed to find a job and that you can practice your profession throughout the EU. The practically oriented degree program means that you will be ready to start work immediately and are optimally prepared to plan and conduct every phase of a complex laboratory analysis process. In the diagnostic stage, you first decide based on the test results how to proceed further. As part of your commitment to lifelong learning you are obligated to keep abreast of the latest technologies so that you can apply and evaluate them. The results of your analyses support the diagnosis, follow-up examination, therapy monitoring and rehabilitation of patients. You work in various health care facilities with materials of human origin and examine in particular blood, bone marrow, urine, feces, tissue, amniotic fluid, saliva and hair. You use a variety of laboratory equipment, prepare tissue samples, examine stained preparations under the microscope or cultivate cell cultures. In clinical diagnostics you work directly with patients and with the help of ECG, spirometry or EEG to measure the performance and functionality of organs such as the heart, lungs or brain. More and more biomedical scientists at universities and in the pharmaceutical industry are pursuing careers in research and development. Many also decide to found their own businesses. You can also apply your laboratory analytical knowledge in other industries. The degree program provides a strong foundation together with practical work experience and continuing training to manage teams and laboratory facilities.
We work closely with the Vienna Healthcare Group, laboratories for general medicine, the Medical University of Vienna and other European universities, the professional association biomed austria and other health care facilities. This guarantees you strong contacts for internships, employment or participation in research and development activities. You will complete the extensive internships at, among others, the hospitals of the Vienna Healthcare Group. You can find information about our cooperation activities and much more at Campusnetzwerk. It's well worth visiting the site as it may direct you to a new job or interesting event held by our cooperation partners!
