Sustainable Packaging Technology

The Sustainable Packaging Technology degree program was developed together with the packaging industry and provides an overview of the most important packaging materials of paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass. The practically oriented program covers the entire life cycle of packaging, from development to production and all the way to marketing and quality management. The focus is on employability and sustainable product design. Disposal and recycling also plays an important role in the program.

    You are interested in natural sciences, especially chemistry, physics, environment science and their related technologies. You want to combine this interest with your affinity for marketing and design and to apply your understanding of economic relationships. Perhaps you have a background in the packaging industry or nutritional sciences or have already acquired know-how in food technology. Others would describe you as being practical and as a creative thinker. Typically you enjoy tinkering with things to improve them. Integrated thinking is one of your strengths. You approach problems in a structured, analytical and organized manner and have a strong sense of quality awareness.

    Relevant vocational qualification with additional examinations

    • Minimum age 20 (with three years of vocational school) or 22 years. You may have obtained your vocational qualification through a pertinent apprenticeship, foreman examination or verifiable occupation within the construction sector. Applicants opting for this admission route should contact the secretary's office for the necessary forms.

    The admission procedure consists of a written test and an interview with the admission committee.

    • Aim
      The aim is to ensure places are offered to those persons who complete the multi-level admission procedure with the best results. The tests are designed to assess the skills needed for your chosen profession.
    • Process
      In a written test your logical thinking skills and understanding of scientific processes are analyzed and documented. This test serves to determine your aptitude for a scientific education. In the second phase of the admission procedure you will take part in an interview to help determine your ability and readiness to learn. The focus is on motivation, capacity for careful consideration, ability to work well under pressure and endurance as well as the ability to express yourself verbally. The admission interview will be evaluated by a score.
    • Criteria
      The criteria for acceptance are based solely on performance. The geographical origin of the applicant has no influence on the admission decision. The admission requirements must be met in all cases. Applicants are evaluated according to the following weighting system:
      • Admission test (60%)
      • Admission interview (40%)

      The admission committee (which comprises, among others, the head of the academic section and representatives of the teaching staff) awards places to the applicants who score highest in the tests. The process as a whole and all test and assessment results from the admission procedure are documented in a transparent and verifiable manner.


    During the studies

    The degree program was developed together with leading companies in the packaging industry and brand owners who also provided the impetus to create the program. In teaching and research we also cooperate with the University of Munich, the Technical University of Vienna and the Austrian Research Institute for Chemistry and Technology. This network allows us to attract outstanding lecturers, develop R&D projects and make excursions to industrial facilities. This provides you with excellent opportunities to make valuable contacts for your future career already during your studies. The degree program itself is located at the Campus Vienna Biocenter. You will have access to the ultramodern auditoriums and laboratories for chemistry and microbiology of the renowned life sciences location. In addition, you will benefit from FH Campus Wien as a multidisciplinary university. For example, the Molecular Biotechnology degree programs conduct research in the field of cell-based test systems. The Sustainable Packaging Technology degree program is also involved here, testing packaging for hormone activity. The Campus Lectures also explore current and diverse topics with prominent experts from the industry and FH Campus Wien regularly invites you to join these public lecture evenings.

    This degree program is unique in Austria and was developed together with packaging companies and covers the most important packaging materials of paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass. The focus is on sophisticated goods like food and pharmaceutical products and their interactions with the materials used in the packaging. The practically oriented program covers the entire life cycle of packaging, from development and production to recycling and disposal all the way to marketing and quality management. Thus the degree program combines the different subjects of natural sciences and engineering with business administration and design.It is aimed at generalists who can expect to quickly find professional work in their chosen field. The future-oriented topics of health and sustainability with the three dimensions of economics, environment and social issues are the focus of the degree program. Many factors play a role in a sustainable packaging solution: material properties, social issues in the work organization or senior- and child-friendly packaging, the environment and of course the economic viability. The degree program is designed as a part-time program with three-day blocks per month and e-learning content so that it can be attended by career professionals residing both in and outside of Austria.

    This interdisciplinary degree program combines science subjects like chemistry and microbiology as well as technical principles with knowledge of economics, environment and quality control to form a complete package:

    You learn what is important for optimal packaging and how packaging is developed, produced, recycled and disposed of in an environmentally and economically friendly manner. Scientific expertise serves as the basis for understanding the material properties of the packaging and how they relate to the requirements for filling substances such as food or pharmaceutical products. With your training in business administration you will be able to analyze the situation, costs, benefits and effects of packaging and to use it as a marketing tool.

    Functional packaging design that is suitable for disposal, product protection, quality management and possible toxic effects of packaging are important content of the program. Through your training in quality management, you will learn how to use Six Sigma, a quality management method that at the same time serves as a management system for improving processes such as reducing energy consumption or increasing production.

    Accompanying this, a business concept is to be created independently on the basis of what has been learned.

    Working out methods: - Independent working out of textbook contents at home in the distance learning phase. Working material (textbook excerpts, supplementary videos) are provided, students have to learn the content independently and use the acquired knowledge to solve exercises (calculation examples, comprehension questions, etc.). Furthermore, there are small exercises as a loosening up during the lecture which are solved in pairs or threes.

    Presenting methods: Lecture to convey basics

    Developing methods:

    • Work assignments: students work out work assignments, which are handed in and assessed via Moodle. Feedback is also provided via Moodle.
    • Teamwork: In addition to working on a specific topic and applying what they have learned, students acquire interdisciplinary skills such as social skills, media didactic skills and language skills while working in a group. Students become familiar with the guidelines for seminar papers and learn how to write a scientific paper.
    • Creation of a Power Point presentation for individual work: The students present the results of their individual work in the form of a Power Point presentation. This makes the topic accessible to the whole group and encourages discussion.
    • Student discussion: Students discuss relevant trends in the packaging industry in small groups.

    As a generalists you have an overview of the most important packaging material. This knowledge and your interdisciplinary know-how place you in high demand in production, packaging development and design, quality assurance, technical purchasing and sales or marketing. You will start as an assistant or project assistant, product developer, application engineer, a designer, packaging inspector, lab technician, purchasing or sales agent with opportunities for advancement to production-, quality-, marketing -or sales manager. You can support companies in all these areas as a consultant.

    Production
    The central task is to set up and optimize production such that the new packaging with its material properties meets all the demands to provide the best possible quality at a low cost and with a minimum of energy consumption and waste production.

    Package Development and Design
    As a packaging designer you not only design attractive packaging, but also ensure the best possible protection of the filled goods, because you realize the potential risks that come with the changed packaging form. You will work in the development to typographic design and acceptance testing.

    Quality Assurance / Product Safety / Packaging Inspection
    Quality assurance requires many organizational and process-oriented steps as well as analysis, inspections and the investigation of specific cases of damage. You design the company’s own quality management system and inspect packaging to ensure the quality for the consumers.

    Technical Purchasing and Sales
    The retail industry in particular requires specialists who can engage with food producers and clients to determine the requirements for packaging. Your job profile also includes being the first person of contact for orders, complaints and claims.

    Marketing / Advertising / Design
    In this area you will be involved in creative packaging design and take advantage of the shaping and printing possibilities for various packaging materials. The convenience of the packaging is an important issue, for example in the development of packaging that is easy to open and close again or is easy to use for the elderly or children. You are responsible for the typographic design and initial production.
