Research cooperation Smart Village Neuhaus

Project duration: 1.8.2022 – open

Supply security supply despite climate change - this is the primary goal of the project that FH Campus Wien is implementing with the municipality of Neuhaus in Carinthia. The first step involves the water supply for the municipality, which has a population of just over 1,000.

Extreme weather makes precipitation more unpredictable, long dry spells are no longer uncommon, and rising temperatures add to water consumption. Budgetary and staffing constraints are additional challenges in ensuring supply security for micro-communities. Technical solutions can mitigate these challenges.

In July 2022, the Bachelor's program Computer Science and Digital Communications, the Master's program Software Design and Engineering and the Competence Center Vienna Institute for Safety and Systems Engineering (VISSE) started a research cooperation in the field of Internet of Things with the municipality of Neuhaus. In a first step, the students of FH Campus Wien implement monitoring solutions, which provide a reliable and efficient basis for the operation of the water supply for the few municipal employees, but also for the population.

Subsequently, it is planned that these monitoring solutions will also include other areas, such as winter road maintenance. The focus is explicitly on the requirements of very small communities. Starting with the winter semester 2022/23, student teams have begun to work on the implementation of solutions in Bachelor's and Master's projects. Using machine learning models and involving the AI Lab of FH Campus Wien, methods for the early detection of anomalies in the water network are to be developed. For this purpose, the sensor data of the municipality Neuhaus will be used.
