Technical Building Equipment

Building Services Engineering

Academic course, part-time

The rapid march of environmental technologies is making automated building services one of the most innovative fields of the construction sector, and one that is inextricably linked to demands for energy efficiency and environmentally sound construction. This program covers all aspects of heating, ventilation, climate control and electrical systems along with low energy and passive house standards. It aims to give you a command of the system as a whole.

*Academic course of advanced professional training according to §9 FHStG

What you can offer

Your aim is to learn more about civil engineering and emerging technologies linked to specific building installations. Your own environmental awareness motivates you to adopt sustainable approaches, while your understanding of economics enables to you recognize what is actually feasible. You regard components as parts of an overall system rather than individual parts. In weighing up the various options, your thought process is linked-up and solution-focused. Intellectually you like to be ahead of your time; in practical terms you live in the here and now.

What we offer you

In the 15 years and more that FH Campus Wien has been running civil engineering programs, the university of applied sciences has built up a wealth of expertise and a broad network that offers you numerous possibilities both during your program and in your subsequent professional life. This network includes construction firms such as STRABAG SE, which cooperates with FH Campus Wien in the further education of its staff and other areas. The final milestone on the educational pathway is the start of the Green Building architecture program. Students in the program benefit because we provide the necessary interfaces between modern building services and civil engineering and architecture in-house. Aside from interdisciplinary theory, practical relevance is our top priority. During the program you will work on an interdisciplinary building equipment project, planning a complex system of building equipment for a commercial or a residential structure. Practical relevance is also guaranteed at our Campus Lecture evenings, which are open to all and feature contributions from prominent experts.

What makes this degree program special

It is no longer enough to 'tack on' a solution as an afterthought: clients demand comprehensive, forward-looking concepts that include efficient and flexible answers to the trends and usages of the future. That's why rather than focus on the development or production of individual systems, this program revolves around the ways in which heating, ventilation, cooling, sanitary and electrical components in a system interact, with particular reference to civil engineering and architecture.

Aside from the study of low energy and passive house standards, it is the emphasis on taking the whole system into consideration from initial planning stage to interdisciplinary interface that makes this program special. You will have achieved your goal only when a system's entire cycle - from production to application - delivers positive energy performance: at that point, a building is operating sustainably and self-sufficiently.

What you will learn in the degree program

This academic program links all aspects of heating, ventilation, climate control and electrical systems with low energy and passive house standards.

  • You will become familiar with various forms of renewable energy generation and water supply systems,
  • and work with regenerative sources such as photovoltaics, geothermal energy, solar thermal energy and groundwater.
  • You will acquire a knowledge of electrical networks and systems for buildings.
  • At the same time, you will develop an understanding of methods for controlling, monitoring and quantifying technical systems, supply facilities and installations.

Semester dates
Winter semester: September to December
Summer semester: February to June

Numer of teaching weeks
8 per semester

Thur. 5:30 p.m to 9:30 p.m.,
Fri. 8:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.,
Sat. 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

How you benefit

Low energy and passive house construction are established as standard methods in residential building while rapidly gaining ground in the area of office construction. For offices that plan building services, the market is expanding rapidly. Building services experts are in demand from facility management firms, building equipment specialists, the building trade and the construction industry; there are also openings in architecture and planning offices. As a graduate of the program, you will undertake traditional project planning tasks, compile professional tenders or work in the project management area.

  • Facility management
  • Building equipment companies
  • The building trade and construction industry
  • Architecture and planning offices
