We maintain close cooperation with social work organizations with which we exchange knowledge and experience in "Social Work in Practice" networking meetings, as well as at conferences regularly held at FH Campus Wien. At our campus we have our own Competence Center for Social Work which acts as an interface between research, practice and teaching. It brings the knowledge and innovation potential of these three areas together in one place. The study "Social Support for Traumatized Persons", which was conducted on behalf of the ESRA association, is only the latest example of the research conducted here. The course "Research and Development Project" also provides a strong focus on practical relevance and research in the second and third semesters. Internships during your studies are guided, integrated learning phases in different social institutions that generally do not offer compensation. During the degree program you will complete a total of three guided internships. They may be completed in Austria or abroad. We will support you in internships or theory semesters abroad. The courses are generally taught in German. However, we offer two seminar groups with some courses in English (up to 30% of the courses). If you are accepted into the degree program, please let us know if you would like to attend one of these seminar groups.
This general basic education will qualify you to work as a social worker and a social educator. The location in Vienna offers a wealth of interesting internship opportunities in innovative projects and organizations in social work. The double qualification in social work and social education creates excellent job opportunities. The strong international orientation of the degree program allows you to deepen your language and intercultural skills with a theory semester or internship abroad. Students receive insight into the foundations and the historical development of feministic, gender and diversity theories, whereby difference and variety as well as processes of establishing difference will become more concrete given the core criteria of diversity. Central concepts, such as for example construction and deconstruction or doing gender, will be communicated and the students will learn how to reflect upon their own gender roles, their knowledge and experiences. The integration of gender and diversity aspects in communication and action strategies of students are of central importance in this course. In addition, students learn concrete approaches to work in social work so that the foundations of gender and diversity management are taken into consideration.

In this course, students are given a historic overview of the disciplinary and professional development of social work from the “Fürsorge” (relief aid) to modern social work. Using select examples from individual historic periods of development, the possibilities and limits of social work at a specific time and place to deal with material and psycho-social life situations professionally will be illuminated. In this sense, special attention will be paid to embedding the development of social work and social pedagogy and their methods in specific community, political and economic contexts.

Student gain an overview of the various forms of communication in social work (i.e. counselling, negotiation, mediation, accompaniment in voluntary and mandated contexts) and explore various aspects/concepts of communication theoretically and as related to praxis (i.e. analysis of the course of a conversation). The first practical placement in the framework of the curriculum offers an overview for professional orientation as well as the exploration of social work and social pedagogical fields of employment. In this context, students are introduced to specific organisations and forms of organisations of social work and receive and insight into complex social problem areas in the structures of the practical placement positions. They learn thereby to perceive various client groups with their specific life and need situations. In addition, they become comfortable with various social work and social pedagogical methods and documentation repertoires and can observe concrete processes in the work. The students gain insight into their future professional role, which lays the foundation for the development of a specific professional identity.
In this course, students gain an understanding of the conditions and goals of „reflection“. Together they develop group rules and norms for the course. Self-perception and the perception by others, will be practised and the ability to work as a team and cooperate strengthened. In addition, students gain foundational knowledge of select social organisations, i.e. in terms of their history, goals, responsibilities, legal frameworks, financial foundations, repertoire of professional methods, organisation structure and documentation. Current questions in select institutions as well as concrete practise experience will be reported, reflected upon and, when appropriate, placed in a theory – praxis relationship. From a psychological perspective, an overview of perception, intelligence and theories of personalities, as well as theories of learning, will be presented. The basic forms of pedagogy will be explored with a special focus on approaches to child raising, learning and theories of education. The sociological perspectives explore theories of social control or, where appropriate, deviant behaviour. In addition, social exclusion, social disadvantages/discrimination, the connection between material, economic and social problems and processes of community exclusion will be broached.
After an introduction to theroetical scientific concepts collection and evaluation methods of empirical scientific research with an emphasis on quantitative and qualitative social research will be presented and possible application in social work research will be discussed.
Beginning with social phenomena, praxis or research relevant research questions will be developed in response to the specific life situations of target groups of social work or existing social offers. This will be done, in part, in cooperation with social institutions. Following a study of the literature, a concrete research or evaluation design will be conceptualized, the methodical implementation clarified and data collection undertaken.

Students receive an introduction to family work, systems, structures, functions and roles. In doing so, the idea of children as symptom carriers is central to the professional analysis and action plan (i.e. help in questions of raising children, communicating offers of support to the family). In addition, there is an introduction to special problem areas such as (alcohol) dependent parents, families in dissolution, child custody and visitation agreements. In regards to the problem of danger to child well being, students learn to consider specific terminology, steps in the interventions process and the range of social work and social pedagogical solution strategies.

Students receive an introduction to select social medical foundations, such as pregnancy, birth and illness in babies, children and youth. The focal points of the course are specifications of handicaps and the recognition of child abuse. Students receive a foundational introduction to psychiatry as it differs from psychology, neurology and psychotherapy. Main topics include mental health problems of youth and their effect on the family system.

Casework as a form of work and method in social work, including historical developments, theoretical foundations and ethical implication, will be deepened. Given concrete cases, we will practise, for example, seeing multiple perspectives of a case, the circular problem solution process, the possibility of planned intervention and design, the analysis of organisational framework conditions, the topic of documentation and evaluation, as well as the limits to cooperation with experts from other disciplines. In doing so, a special focus will be laid on the implementation of the principle of life-setting oriented social work such as „successful everyday life“, participation, normalisation, reflection, etc.

Given exemplatory sample cases, students gain insight into the foundations of family, inheritance and youth welfare rights that are relevant for social work, including their procedural specialities. The course explores the foundations of psychological development and the psychosocial conditions of change. In doing so, theoretical approaches and research results regarding the question of nature or nurture, early childhood development, hospitalism, bonding research, concepts of developmental stages and resiliency research. The evaluation of child related problems, instruments of developmental diagnostics, learning handicaps, learning blocks and berdensome situations will be introduced. The problem situations will be explored from a psychological point of view.

In this course, the meaning of social work in and with groups and teams as a goal oriented instrument for individual learning, and for the design of social learning processes will be communicated. Students become acquainted with the requirements for the acquisition of professionalism as a participant and as leader of groups and teams. Topics of the course will be: diverse work with groups in social work as an entrance to life settings and milieus (i.e. in youth work), a (pedagogical) offer of support (i.e. organised self-help groups), the foundation and accompaniment of interest groups (i.e. in community work) as well as the role of social workers and social pedagogues in groups. The use of group case studies is helpful, however the reflected group experience of the students as participants in the course remains the central focus.

The central focus of this course revolves around typical schemes of progress and the structuring of counselling interviews in settings with individual clients, families, or systems. Role-plays provide a starting point for professional reflection of conversations. Here, special attention is paid to a respectful attitude and mode of engagement.Differing approaches to counselling (i.e. systemic, solution-oriented, person-centred, psychoanalytical) will be introduced and the systemic-solution oriented consultation will be especially practiced in role-plays.

Students will be introduced to the sociological, politico-economic and political science foundations of urban and rural development. The social phenomena of unequal regional developments will be debated and changes in the relation of public and private space reflected. Different theories and models of social space will be introduced and students will learn to relate them to functions and interventions of social work.With a view of political fields such as economic improvement policies, residential construction policies, democratisation policies, security and order policies, students will be introduced to procedures and stakeholders at the state level, and they will make connections to altered functions and forms of interventions of social work.

They will be introduced to the theme of social control and will explore structural violence and the topic of social capital. Students will deal with educational concepts for adults and learn approaches of biographical work, especially in the field of educational consultation and professional orientation, as well as working with elderly people. They experience basic results through the analysis of age-specific coping challenges in consideration of age and culture related characteristics.Students will be given an overview of professional pedagogical conceptions as well as the economics and management of education.Approaches specific to phases of life in terms of leisure time, work, retirement and managing day-to-day life, receive special focus and attention.
The collected data will be evaluated through chosen methods of empirical social research and the results of such analysis presented in a written paper. The concluding results form the gateway for the development of a project-concept, which, after completion, will be presented to an expert audience for discussion.The group-bachelor work includes the academic-empirical treatment of the research-question explored here, or the implementation of an evaluation-study as well as the demonstration of a project-concept that builds on the results made in the prior analysis.

Students will be given relevant knowledge concerning the scope of work and problem solving approaches in the field of health. Furthermore, they will gain an overview of particular private- and public support-facilities, as well as their financing and disclosure to clients. This is explored through chosen fields of work such as social work in hospitals, in the rehabilitation process of disabled persons, in the stationary and extramularen psychiatry, as well as in work with patients with addiction and HIV/Aids.Themes to be addressed are, for instance, the foundation for self-determined forms of care and assistance in the field of disability, concepts of treatment and prevention of addiction and the self-help for affiliated or affected persons.The exploration of societal and political questions concerning the aforementioned fields of work (disability- and drug policies) carries important significance.

Students explore aspects of medicine and health covering the entire span of adulthood. Aging processes and common aging-related illnesses (i.e. dementia), internal illness, shortcomings of the movement-apparatus, cancer, allergies and vermin will be broached. Furthermore, basic knowledge of profession-related illness will be taught.Fear-related illness, psychosomatic disorders, affective illnesses (depression, mania, und bipolar disorders), as well as post-traumatic stress disorder and schizophrenia/psychosis are each taught with a focus on the recognition of symptoms and the possibilities of therapy. The problem of violence in psychiatry as well as consultation situations will be discussed and strategies for prevention and de-escalation will be developed. The second practical placement provides concrete knowledge of the nature of organisations and practical job experience, which gives students an all-round perspective into the everyday professional life of social workers and social pedagogues. It allows for them to understand the life context and problems of clients or specific groups and lets them realise the scope, impact and responsibility that their professional actions have. Furthermore, the orienting placement also provides exposure to various profession-related realities and allows connections to be made between what has been theoretically instructed and practical experiences, thus allowing the possibility to question the adaptability and relevance of theory in everyday work life.
Based on the learning experience gained in the practical placement context, students will learn to examine concrete case analyses and methods as well as theoretical and conceptual foundations of praxis organisation. In preparation for the practical placement in the following semester, detailed planning of the instruction-period, especially the exploration of general and personal learning-goals will take place.

Students receive an overview of forms of organisations, general frameworks and goals of chosen offers in public child and adolescent work (i.e. youth centres, park care, scouting or mobile youth work). Hereby the goals of open child and adolescent work are thematiczed, such as the structure of leisure time, the aid in personal/personality development, the support of the development of gender identity and relation-capability, and the creation of social-pedagogical „rehearsal rooms“ in the sense of professionally aided intermediate worlds for „immediate life emergencies“. Students will also familiarize themselves with approaches and methods of life context as well as practice social pedagogical interventions with individual and group consultation and accompaniment processes.With the help of case examples, students will be asked to analyse complex social problems and themes of children and adolescents, and to concretely distinguish the role, function and professional orientation of social work, to develop possibilities of action and reason between methodical interventions in a detailed manner.

Students will receive insight into national- and international drug policies, will be informed of various forms of addiction and dependency and their effects as well as the effects of psychotropic substances.Through case analyses, professional offers of prevention, consultation, support care and measures of integration will be presented. The relation to medical and psychotherapeutical help will be shown, as well as criminal justice and general exclusion of society of addicts.The involvement of the history of psychiatry, reforms of psychiatry and social psychiatry should highlight the position within social work and help in voluntary and forced contexts. Knowledge of psychiatrical depiction of illness and the pertinent legal bases (i.e. involuntary commitment) will be clarified.By means of case studies, the approach of social work in in-patient fields, in psychosocial accommodations and in contexts of conservatorship will be depicted.

Students will be given an overview of programs, projects and organisations that offer social work in the public space and/or are active in regional work (i.e. neighbourhood projects, centres of city improvement, streetwork). Here, concepts of order and measures in public spaces and parts of the city (i.e. housing developments, free spaces, train stations, shopping streets) are critically defined. Through long-term dealing in a practical field, a deeper and more continuous insight into the reality of the profession of social workers and social pedagogues is possible, as well as the testing of prospective professional roles. Working independently with client and client groups in various phases of a process of accompaniment or an intervention can be practiced. Practical experiences should be linked with theoretical knowledge acquired in the course.
Students will be introduced to the sociological, politico-economic and political science foundations of urban and rural development. The social phenomena of unequal regional developments will be debated and changes in the relation of public and private space reflected. Different theories and models of social space will be introduced and students will learn to relate them to functions and interventions of social work.With a view of political fields such as economic improvement policies, residential construction policies, democratisation policies, security and order policies, students will be introduced to procedures and stakeholders at the state level, and they will make connections to altered functions and forms of interventions of social work.With concrete case examples, the students will be instructed to develop an understanding of complex networks of stakeholders and forms of cooperation before the background of divided competence and decision making procedures at the state level.
Students will acquire knowledge concerning the generation and implementation of social norms. They will be introduced to the theme of social control and will explore structural violence and the topic of social capital. Behaviour peripheral to theory will be included.Basic knowledge of interaction and interactional analyses will be connected to principles of conflict-study, aggression and de-escalation, motivation and cooperation.Knowledge of diagnostics and assessment should heighten the interdisciplinary capability of social workers and social pedagogues for action.

With the aid of theoretical inputs, students will take a closer look at the regulations of the Austrian law related to aliens. Furthermore, also with help of exemplatory cases, they will be shown how to translate their theoretical knowledge into practice. The goal is to impart an overview of the law related to aliens as well as find orientation within those regulations.Especially the focus points immigration, asylum and termination of sojourn will be handled thematically.

Students will get to know the causes and dynamics of (global) migration as well as the effects of migration on the countries of origin and immigration countries, and will engage with flight as a special form of migration. They will be given an overview of the migration population in Austria and confront themselves with the worlds and circumstances of life of migrants and their offspring.The relevant organisations in the field will be introduced, and intercultural proceedings discussed. With the help of case examples, the students’s intercultural competence will be strengthened, and concrete courses of action will be acquired.

While absolving the practical placement, the continuous theory led reflection and analysis of various personal and professional experiences in individual and group contexts will be set in the foreground. The integration of students’ own experiences and the exchange within the group deepen the professional understanding and offer a valuable contribution to the development of the profession identity.Students learn to deal with team and organisational structures, case analyses, theoretical and conceptual foundations of practical organisations, and methodical action.Before the practical placement, the preparation and detailed planning of this phase of training will take place. Specific thematic focus points, which carry practical relevancy, will be acquired. Furthermore, students will confront themselves with general learning-goals and set concrete personal goals.

Students will be given an overview of the fields of activity of social work with elderly people and will explore the life-circumstances of this group. With the help of case examples, professional approaches will be learned in respect to institutional requirements, especially with a focus on living/housing, poverty, violence and the tension of freedom limiting measures.
Students will be given an overview of programs, projects and organisations that offer social work in the public space and/or are active in regional work (i.e. neighbourhood projects, centres of city improvement, streetwork). Here, concepts of order and measures in public spaces and parts of the city (i.e. housing developments, free spaces, train stations, shopping streets) are critically defined. Projects of participation development and social partiality within the city region are discussed as well, so as to develop and make them useful for social work-related aspects of action.
Using the competencies acquired to date, students are given the opportunity to implement their comprehensive basic knowledge of select, current topics in social work. Courses in this category either broaden or deepen knowledge in one or more fields of social work or in a scientific field associated with social work, hereby students can choose according to their own interests.
Through the long-term exploration of a field of practice, insight into the professional reality of social workers and care workers and the exploration of the future professional roles is possible. Independent work with clients (or groups) in various phases of a counselling process or interventions can be tested. These practical experiences should be connected to the theoretical knowledge acquired over the course of study.
Working with specific cases, students prepare themselves for their role as expert in social work. They practise analysis and formulating steps to take action in complex case studies, including consideration of micro, meso and macro levels. They develop well-argued plans of action given concrete casework. In the casework, students can implement their professional, theoretical, field specific and methodical knowledge.

In this course students will examine the causes and phases of conflicts as well as the levels of escalation. Basic attitudes, basic principles and techniques of mediation as well as their possibilities and limits in the context of social work will be presented and tested in role-plays. An important topic of this course is also gaining insight into the preparation and implementation of negotiations in private and professional contexts (e.g. as a resource to establish systems of help in the context of social work).
At the centre of this course stand specific concepts and methods in the work with individuals and their environments, in working in and with groups and in the work in and with community, respectively in and with specific contexts. Working from theoretical foundations, competencies to enable students to take action in professional interaction with clients of social work and their special conditions will be taught. Because various courses will be offered, it is possible to specialise in a method in accordance with special interests. For example, such courses are possible: online counselling, out of court settlements, teamwork, and special communication approaches.

In this course students are introduced to the foundations and terminology of political processes, political communication and the aggregation of interests. Given concepts such as nation, democracy, public realm, political culture or power, central perspectives of political action in social work will be communicated. Subsequently, given select political fields, students are given the opportunity to analyse the connections between politics and social work and learn to develop political action in the tension between representative systems and non-formalised areas of politics.

Schools of economic and development thought are being presented in the context of structural problems and immanent crises of the capitalist system of production. Emphasis will be placed on the development of society in social, political, and economic terms. Historical circumstances of theory building will be discussed, and selected topics of international political economy (institutions, industrial production, labor, food sovereignty …) will be broached. Main focus is the current situation within the European Union with its structural imbalances between core and peripheral countries. The political-economic roots and causes of European uneven development are being discussed and the social consequences of economic decision making with its implications for social work identified.

This is an integrated course (ILV) which means that it consists of seminar and lecture elements. The course combines individual and group work, students will present, comment, and discuss designed texts. The lecturer will accompany this process with thematic inputs and short lectures. The acquired knowledge will be used for a course paper.
Full time students: In various settings, students will present their experiences from the practical placements of the previous semester; in doing so, various presentation techniques will be implemented. In small groups and in individual coaching, students reflect upon and analyse relevant topics from the professional practice and provide insights into questions and problems they have brought with them from various social institutions and social systems (both in Austria and abroad). The learning experiences from the practical placement will be connected to each other and integrated in the context of the training in such a way that the professional identity is supported. Part time students:During the practical placements which are experienced between the 3rd and 5th semester, emphasis will be placed on the continual reflection and analyse of diverse personal and professional experiences, both in single and group contexts, as well as the integration of experiences in the students’ own professional understanding. This serves the students own development of a professional identity.

Students are introduced to central sociological theories, concepts and systems on the macro-, meso- and micro-sociological levels. Relationships between society and the individual within social structures, institutions / networks and social interaction in primary groups will be analysed and reflected upon. Special attention will be paid to social inequality and social exclusion. In response to guiding questions in select special sociologies (e.g. organisations sociology, educational sociology, criminal sociology) the students learn to use sociological perspectives to understand social problem for the praxis of social work and to reflect upon and connect to current developments in the fields of social work.
In the context of this course, actual planning and organisation of project days for specific thematic focuses which will be conducted. These project days take place in the following the semester. The preparation work will be divided up in the group; the instructor functions as a coach.

Students reflect on the requirements for a scientific paper in terms of research strategies, developing a focus on a topic and formulating a thesis. Students learn various ways of analysing literature and become acquainted with formal rules of scientific writing. They practice scientific argumentation and analyse of specific fields of discourse in their profession, learn how to evaluate sources and understand the criteria for evaluating scientific writing. Students are accompanied in writing their concrete expose and in focusing the topic of their writing. Concrete source material will be discussed with students and provided for the writing and research process in the composition of individual Bachelor papers.

Media plays a constitutive part in the everyday life of todays adolecents. Young people turn to media for entertainment, communication and information - but also in their search for orientation, values, norms, role models. Social media platforms function like digital play grounds for identity experiments.Concepts like "digital natives" suggest us that adolecents today would have fairly similar media skills. On a closer observation, however, this proves not to be true. The advantages accumulate; those who have a better social and educational background, also tend to use media in a more varied way and are better aware of risks and possibilities. The level of a persons media literacy skills co-determine his/her ability to participate fully in the digital society, as well as his/her educational and career/job opportunities. Youth work has the potential to narrow this "digital gap" by strengthening it's clients creative, critical, reflexive and self-responsible media skills.

Students receive insight into areas of law that are relevant for the organisation of social work. Included in this are the basic labour law and employment relationships, the rights and duties of employees and employers, the possibility to end an employment relationship and employee protection. To round out the seminar, also formal aspects, especially lawsuits before the labour and social court (Arbeits- und Sozialgericht ASG) will be presented and basic tendencies of laws related to organisations, club, assembly and event will be examined.

In dieser Lernveranstaltung erarbeiten sich die Studierenden grundlegendes Wissen über die Kennzeichen von psychosozialen Krisen (traumatische Krise, Veränderungskrisen, suizidale Krise, chronifizierten Krisen, chronische Krisenanfälligkeit) und deren typische Verläufe in Abgrenzung zu Trauma und posttraumatischen Belastungsstörungen. Die Studierenden erfahren krisen- und traumaspezifisches Handlungswissen, insbesondere Gesprächstechniken und Gesprächshaltungen zur Deeskalation von psychosozialen Krisen.

The seminar provides knowledge and technique for a successful begin in professional relationships. It helps to understand and reflect the conscious and unconscious psychodynamic in the beginning of a relationship. It covers relationships to babies and toddlers till old age and to people with a lack of language skills. It shows the importance of the first contact and interviewing methods.
The marking consists of active participation, role-play, willingness to self-reflect as well as reading and reflecting on the basic texts.

Students acquire theoretical, foundational knowledge of business related terminology and organisational forms, including their functional construction and execution as is relevant for the social sector. Along with a differentiated presentation of the supporters of the social economic sector, themes like quality control and development, models of finance, the cultures of organisations as well as client relevant documentation and evaluation are explored.

Students are introduced to the foundations of ethics, especially to the ethics of social work. They study individual and social relevant themes in depth in as they apply to social work (e.g. freedom, justice, responsibility, human dignity) and they recognize moral conflicts or dilemmas, as well as structural problem situations of professional work. They receive basic knowledge of professional ethics, in relation to that they are introduced to international agreements and discourses and can critically reflect upon these in light of the development of their professional identity and the potential entrance into their professional field.

You will be able to choose from a wide professional spectrum: In social education you will help people in the longer term and help them in their everyday lives, for example in nursing homes, assisted living communities, or disabled facilities. In social work you will accompany people through critical points in their lives. For example when they are unemployed and on the verge of losing their apartment. In this case you as a social worker will help them to apply for unemployment benefits, to prevent their eviction and to settle their debts. You will work together with institutions and authorities. In addition to working with individual clients, your potential responsibilities will also include modifying structures and developing new systems.

The following university entrance qualification examinations are recommended: > Social Science and Economics (Essay, Mathematics 1, English 2, History 2 and one elective subject); > Psychology (Essay, Mathematics 2, Biology, English 2 and one elective subject); > Philosophy (Essay, History 2, English 2, Latin 2 and one elective subject; > Pedagogy (Essay, History 2, Latin 2, English 2 and one elective subject). However, we do acknowledge all university entrance qualification examinations for fulfillment of the entry requirement. Thus you will also have the opportunity to choose an alternate program at a university.
You have a professional qualification certificate from a middle vocational training school for social services or with an emphasis on social work of at least three years, a comparable middle vocational training school for psychosocial education, an education in the health sector, a health or nursing diploma, an education as a geriatric care provider or nursing care provider, completion of courses for youth work in combination with at least 600 hours of professional experience, or through the German "Fachhochschulreife" in the field of Social Work. The required additional examinations include Mathematics, History 2 and Foreign language 2.
There are 120 places available in the bachelor's degree program in Social Work each year. The ratio of places to applicants is currently around 1:6. After being accepted to the program you will have to provide us with the following documents:
