Integrated Safety and Security Management

Bachelor, part-time

Overview

Increasing white-collar crime, higher demands made by corporate criminal law, the threat of natural disasters, industrial accidents and sabotage render company security increasingly important. Operational security management therefore increasingly needs to cover all corporate sectors. Apart from acquiring detailed knowledge about risk in the field of "people - infrastructure - organization", you will gain knowledge in psychology and learn about human behavior in extreme situations.

What you can offer

Security must be innate, planned, implemented and continuously adapted. This is firmly embedded in your consciousness. You must also timeously recognize and correctly assess risk factors. Security issues are relevant both internally and externally. You are keen in this respect to acquire a sound knowledge base backed up by a recognized academic education. A sense of responsibility and assertiveness are a natural part of you. You always keep your cool in difficult situations. This helps you stay calm and collected and make the right decisions.

What we offer you

Our Bachelor degree program is extensively interlinked with companies. This generates research and development projects for students to participate in. The exchange encourages the practical relevance and currency of our degree program content. Valuable contacts to potential employers are in this way made possible. As an example of the practical relevance of our degree program, we can introduce you to two selected projects:

  • Handbook "Know-how-Schutz für die Österreichische Wirtschaft" ("Protection of know-how for the Austrian economy")
On 18th November 2010, the Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Agency for State Protection and Counter Terrorism, the Federation of Austrian Industries, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and FH Campus Wien jointly presented their study on the direct impact of economic and industrial espionage on Austrian companies. A practical reference publication was created based on these results, describing how companies may optimize protection against espionage.
  • Online guide "Asset security"
In collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, FH Campus Wien presented an online guide for entrepreneurs, focusing on protection of their company's assets, warehouse or operational buildings. The guidebook explains how to easily assess how secure an asset is and the actions required to eliminate any weak points.
  • Practical relevance is also guaranteed through our Campus Lecture evenings which are open to all and offer contributions by prominent experts.

What makes this degree program special

The Integrated Safety and Security Management Bachelor degree program started in the 2007/08 academic year and to this day remains innovative in its form in Austria. You will acquire specialized knowledge which will clearly differentiate you from the graduates of other study programs. The security topic is a basic human need and combines many facets. Our teaching staff are all experienced experts in their field and will guide you as you master the extensive range of topics in this field, draw your conclusions therefrom and take the next steps. The focus is mainly on imparting psychological skills and knowledge of the behavior of people in extreme situations. Since it is all about your personal progress in the degree program, individual targets are set to be reached and success is measured by self- and peer-assessment. With a mix of classroom times at the university, online media and an e-portfolio, the degree program is perfect for students locally and from abroad. During your studies you will also benefit from the opportunity of acquiring nationally and internationally recognized certificates.

What you will learn in the degree program

The basic courses will convey an understanding of security issues in its entire scope. You will acquire detailed knowledge in the field of "people - infrastructure - organization". Courses on personality, risk management or management will prepare you for sensitive security and crisis management problems.

  • You will acquire the competency to analyze structural and operational security issues and risks.
  • You will define strategic goals and develop scenarios for the future which allow you to take the requisite precautions.
  • Besides risk analysis, you will deal with technical security and monitoring systems such as asset and fire protection and with security management systems.
  • You will receive nationally and internationally accepted certificates such as training as a security or fire-protection officer or for OHSAS 18001 and QM audits.
  • You will specialize in

    • Economic and industrial espionage
    • Crisis management group exercises
    • Fire protection
    • Environmental management
    • Functional safety
    • Vital leadership
    • Project management
