We will support you towards realizing your ideas for exciting projects and offer you a stage: We exhibit the best projects to a wide audience in our Campus Innovation Lab at Open House or at the BeSt trade fair.

Practical relevance is also guaranteed through our Campus Lecture evenings which are open to all and offer contributions by prominent experts.

What makes this degree program special

The Clinical Engineering Bachelor degree program is Austria's first academic qualification in the coordination of technical systems in the field of healthcare. The mix of topics ranging from medical, electrical and installations technology via IT and building automation (including heating, ventilation, air conditioning and sanitation) to medical basics, supplemented by project and process management skills, will be ideal for your wide range of opportunities in healthcare. Your extensive laboratory work during your studies will include concrete case studies which you may be faced with when practicing your profession. As the member a project team, you will be dealing with different tasks and problems in every semester.
You may in your team design the furnishings and technical supplies of a doctor's practice or a section in a hospital. After planning, you will support the building phase including the required electrical, sanitary, heating and air conditioning installation and also include the necessary IT systems. You will furthermore plan the optimal medical facilities to suit the requirements of the specialist medical staff. To ensure perfect operation of the technical infrastructure, you will design and successfully implement the service and maintenance structure. With the above know-how and your high level of quality and cost awareness you will, after graduation, be qualified for a wide range of responsibilities in the healthcare sector.


What you will learn in the degree program

In the Clinical Engineering Bachelor degree program you will, in addition to comprehensive technical knowledge, also acquire basic know-how in the medical field and in process and project management.

  • The first two semesters of the Bachelor degree program will teach you the technical basics in building and electrical technology and also services and installation, power supply and IT networks.
  • In addition to IT, databases, facility management and process control, semesters three and four also focus on project and process management methods and on medical basics in the fields of anatomy, hygiene and medical systems.
  • The last two semesters concentrate on company and personnel management and on the basics of regulatory healthcare. During this time you will also write your scientific papers and complete your internship in the medical field. Any professional experience you may have in this field may be credited.

As a Clinical Engineering Bachelor degree program graduate, you will be working in a rapidly developing and diversified technical environment and will be in high demand in the job market.

Your future career

The Clinical Engineering Bachelor degree program will convey the basics of medical systems, electrical engineering, IT and building control technology as well as medical basics and project management. This interdisciplinary know-how will enable you to successfully implement healthcare projects and will familiarize you with process management and quality assurance standards and methods. You may, for instance, work in the following core sectors:

  • Healthcare:
    Convalescent homes and hospitals, rehab centers
  • Electrical engineering:
    Furnishing and adaptation of buildings used for medical purposes
  • Medical technology:
    Furnishing of rooms used for medical purposes
  • IT:
    Furnishing, definition, commissioning, maintenance and coordination of IT infrastructure in healthcare facilities and in planning of equipment and plant
  • Building control technology:
    Furnishing of buildings used for medical purposes, project coordination
  • Engineering offices:
    Coordination, project control/management, consulting
  • Facility management in healthcare institutions:
    Maintenance, coordination of interfaces
  • Building and subconstruction:
    Project coordination of new constructions and annexes and conversion of buildings for medical purposes

Admission requirements

  • Higher education entrance qualification:

    • School leaving certificate from a secondary school or a secondary technical school
    • Secondary school vocational certificate (Berufsreifeprüfung)
    • Equivalent certificate from abroad

Equivalence is determined by international agreements, validation or in individual cases a decision by the head of the academic section.

Selection process

The selection process consists of a written test and an interview with the selection committee. The secretary's office will notify you of the date of the selection process.

  • Aim
    The aim is to ensure places are offered to those persons who complete the multi-level selection process with the best results. The tests are designed to assess the skills needed for an applicant's chosen profession.
  • Procedure
    The written selection test includes a number of aspects pertinent to assessing whether you possess the requisite logical thinking ability and the basic scientific knowledge. (Duration: approx. 60 minutes) All applicants will then be invited to a selection interview for feedback on the results of their written test. You will also be queried about your personal circumstances, including your motivation for your choice of degree program (Duration: approx. 20 minutes) Should you fail to meet the entry level requirements for the degree program, you will after selection be advised on how to best prepare yourself for the specific subject.
  • Criteria
    The criteria for acceptance are based solely on performance. Points are awarded for the written test results and the selection interview. The applicants will be ranked correspondingly. The geographical origin of the applicant has no influence on the selection decision. The admission requirements must be met in all cases. The process as a whole and all test and assessment results from the selection process are documented in a verifiable manner and archived.

Getting started

Bridging Courses

First semester students in technical or structural engineering degree programs have the opportunity of attending special refresher and preparatory courses pertinent to their degree program in subjects such as mathematics, physics, English, electronics, C programming etc. This will facilitate entry into the FH degree program and ensure your success in important degree program subjects.

Experience shows that many questions arise during the application phase and the start of the degree program. We therefore propose that interested persons and applicants should network with higher semester students in the same degree program as theirs.
