Overview

Radiographers make images of the human body with the help of large medical technology equipment. To do so they use imaging technology that implements ionizing or non-ionizing radiation. The methods range from skeletal radiology to magnetic resonance imaging. In this way they support the early diagnosis and treatment of several serious diseases. Diagnostic radiology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine are therefore the focus of the degree program in which radiation protection is a key issue.

What you can offer

You are interested in both medicine and technology and are therefore looking for an intersection that combines both. You have already acquired a strong foundation in mathematics and physics. You approach problems logically and analytically, display manual dexterity when operating equipment and have a strong sense of responsibly. Your good spatial imagination helps you to analyze images. Despite all the physical and technical aspects, you never lose sight of the person, who you show great empathy. Strong social skills are also necessary for work in interdisciplinary teams. Your curiosity makes you open to science and research in order to also keep up with the rapid advances in medical technology in the future.

What makes this degree program special

In the degree program you will learn how radiological technological methods work and what their specific advantages and disadvantages are. You are qualified to plan and perform analysis procedures with large medical equipment and to ensure quality assurance. Some methods only verify tissue changes, however nuclear medicine already identifies initial changes in metabolism. When performing radiological examinations, identifying cancer early, thanks to mammography for example, or radiating cancer, you will be working with ionizing particle or electromagnetic radiation. With the help of computer tomography (CT), sectional images of body parts are computer generated based on multiple X-rays. Electromagnetic waves, such as those used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), are not ionizing.

It provides detailed sectional images of tissues and organs on the basis of strong magnetic fields. Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to produce images. A positron emission tomography (PET) is a nuclear medicine procedure that utilizes low-level radioactive substances to produce images of biochemical and physiological functions in the body. With the help of all the techniques you learn about in detail in the degree program, you will contribute to the early diagnosis and treatment of several serious diseases.


What you will learn in the degree program

Radiological diagnostics, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine are the main focus of the degree program. Personal development, knowledge of health law, health economics and project management complete your education.

  • In the basic medical subjects such as anatomy, physiology and pathology you will acquire knowledge about the human organs and bodily functions.
  • Physical-technical subjects impart basic knowledge for proper operation of the equipment.
  • Radiological technical procedures and examination and treatment methods are the focus of the 36 weeks of internships.
  • Radiation protection, digital image data management and teleradiology will round out your education.
  • With in-depth electives you can set your own individual focus.

How you benefit

Radiographers independently perform examinations according to doctor's orders. At the intersection of human, medicine and technology, you will examine and treat patients with the help of radiological diagnostics, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine. On large medical equipment, you are responsible for ensuring examinations are carried out in a timely manner and in good quality and for post-processing the digital data. The large equipment includes computer tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as well as positron emission tomography (PET). As a radiation safety expert, you are competent in ensuring the protection of patients and personnel from ionizing radiation. You work in hospitals or X-ray institutes as well as in the medical technology industry. There you train employees in the use of large equipment, advise on the implementation of teleradiology systems and imageless (digital) X-ray systems, and cooperate in the development of medical devices. With this degree you will be qualified to practice the profession of radiographer. The MTD Act is the basis for this degree program.

Admission

Admission requirements

  • Higher education entrance qualification:

    • School leaving certificate from a secondary school or a secondary technical school.
    • Secondary school vocational certificate (Berufsreifeprüfung)
    • Equivalent certification from abroad

Equivalence is determined by international agreements, validation or in individual cases a decision by the head of the academic section.

  • University entrance qualification examination (Studienberechtigungsprüfung)

Information and institutes that offer courses to prepare for the university entrance qualification examination can be found on the portal Erwachsenenbildung.at of the Federal Ministry for Education and Women.

  • Relevant professional qualification with auxiliary examinations
  • German (non-native speakers): Minimum level B2

 

After being accepted, you must provide the following proof of your suitability:

  • Medical certificate of good health
  • Participation in a first aid course (at least 16 hours, within the last two years)
  • Current extract of your police record

Application

In the winter semester are 60 and in the summer semester 50 places available in the bachelor's degree program in Radiological Technology each year. The ratio of places to applicants is currently around 1:3

To apply you will need the following documents:

  • School leaving certificate / university entrance qualification examination (Studienberecthigungsprüfung) / verification of professional qualifications
  • Letter of motivation (in German)
  • CV in table form (in German)

Please note:
It is not possible to save incomplete online applications. You must complete your application in one session. Your application will be valid as soon as you upload all of the required documents and certificates. In the event that some documents (e.g. references) are not available at the time you apply, you may submit these later via email, mail or in person by no later than the start of the degree program.

The selection process

The selection process consists of a computer-based test, a written questionnaire and an interview with the selection committee.

  • Aim
    The aim is to ensure places are offered to those persons who complete the multi-level selection process with the best results. The tests are designed to assess the skills needed for an applicant's chosen profession.
  • Procedure
    The computer-assisted selection test and the written questionnaire includes a series of test requirements to assesses if you fulfill the basic intellectual and social-emotional performance requirements. The tests mainly assess figural and mathematical intelligence, memory and concentration as well as social skills.
    The selection interview provides a first impression of the applicant's personal suitability. This includes professional motivation, professional understanding, performance, problem-solving skills and a capacity for careful consideration.
    Points are assigned to each section of the test.
    For the computer-assisted test and the interview you have to be in Vienna.
  • Criteria
    The criteria for acceptance are based solely on performance.
    The geographical origin of the applicant has no influence on the selection decision.
    The admission requirements must be met in all cases. The selection committee (which comprises, among others, the head of the academic section and representatives of the teaching staff) awards places to the applicants who score highest in the tests.
