Autumn 2016 will mark the start of the interdisciplinary degree program Sustainable Management of Resources, which was developed in partnership with companies and government agencies. Given the global social challenges of climate change, scarcity of resources, waste management and avoidance and the increasingly stringent environmental legislation associated with all this, the primary focus of the degree program is on designing and optimizing sustainable inter-organizational value chains in companies, from product development to disposal and recycling. Therefore the degree program combines engineering, natural sciences, methods of resource management, business administration and environmental law.

The degree program was developed on a needs-oriented basis together with production and waste management companies and government agencies. These companies and agencies will provide high-caliber experts as lecturers, support extensive internships and grant deep insights into their facilities and infrastructure through excursions. This network of companies and agencies will provide opportunities for research and development projects and will enable you to make valuable contacts for your future career already during your studies. The Vienna Biocenter, the top life sciences address in Austria, also provides the perfect learning atmosphere with its well-equipped lecture halls and laboratories for chemistry and microbiology. The degree program shares this FH-location with the bachelor's degree programs of Packaging Technology and the Biotechnology Department. In many occasions you will benefit from FH Campus Wien as a multidisciplinary university with interdisciplinary activities for example in the area of research and development, as well as events such as the Campus Lectures, public lecture evenings with prominent experts, that FH Campus Wien regularly invites you to join.
Given the global social challenges of climate change, scarcity of resources, waste management and avoidance and the increasingly stringent environmental legislation associated with all this, the need for practically trained experts for resource management and waste management who can go straight to work for companies continues to grow. A primary goal is to design sustainable products and processes and to coordinate them with one another such that resources in the entire value chain are used carefully and waste is avoided as much as possible or is used productively as recyclable materials. In addition, the degree program focuses on the needs of public institutions such as municipalities.
The ability to think outside the box and pursue innovative approaches is crucial for sustainable results. This may even mean changing the existing business model and further developing everything from manufacturing to services. For example, a manufacturer of cleaning products containing non-biodegradable substances may additionally offer their use as a service and thus make the reduction an economic goal of their company. This increases the added value and is sustainable at the same time.
In this degree program you will acquire technical and scientific fundamentals as well as the methods of resource management, a robust business administration education as well as know-how in environmental law.

The students receive guidance and support while developing the appropriate research design, drafting the concept and during writing of their bachelor thesis.The bachelor thesis 2 is an additional work protocol of their work experience, which should be documented and scientifically reflected. The research questions chosen during the work experience result in the topic of the bachelor thesis 2. The bachelor examination will be completed in accordance with the requirements of the examination rules (see supplement A3).
Students are working on a specific assignment with the guidance of a discipline-specific person. During the work experience the technical knowledge, methodical expertise and social competences are applied and strengthened in the aspired field of work.
In the form of individual discussions and group discussions, experiences and procedures are discussed and reflected upon during the internship.

Sustainable management of resources is the core task of waste management companies and today is increasingly important in production and service companies. Until now this educational profile has been lacking on the market, meaning that with this degree you will be prepared to take on a wide variety of positions such as junior manager for resource management and waste management, expert for waste management and disposal concepts, life cycle analysis, sustainability reports, material flow management and resource optimization projects. Your potential professional portfolio will include the function of waste manager as well as the implementation and monitoring of operational waste management systems.
In the manufacturing industry your interdisciplinary know-how will qualify you for challenges in product development, product management, production as well as an office for resource optimization and waste management. With your expertise, you will be able to assume project responsibility for resource efficiency and sustainability for product developments and for supervising company environmental management systems. Important fields of activity for your future are as an expert in purchasing and sales as well as logistics.
The selection process consists of a written test and an interview with the selection committee.
The selection committee (which comprises, among others, the head of the academic section and representatives of the teaching staff) awards places to the applicants who score highest in the tests. The process as a whole and all test and assessment results from the selection process are documented in a transparent and verifiable manner.
