Elementary models of population dynamics: We study the deterministic behaviour of elementary large-ensemble models.

- Exponential growth and its underlying geometric principle, logistic growth, short discussion of the dynamics of non-linear systems (Cobweb diagram).
- Matrix models: Levkovich and Leslie models, Eigenvectors and Eigenvalues as tool to determine the asympotic behaviour of linear models.

Assessment methods

Written examination at the end of the semester.

Mathematics for Biology II ILV

Lector: DI Dr. Ulrich Haböck, Dipl.Ing. Nikolaus Maly

2.5 SWS
2.5 ECTS

Lecture contents

We discuss various basic mathematical models from population dynamics, population genetics and epidemiology, and develop necessary math skills by exploring these models.

(a) Simulation of Leslie models of real Populations based on empirical data,

(b) Population genetics: Hardy--Weinberg equilibrium of large ensemble population and the contrasting genetic drift model of Wright--Fisher.

Assessment methods

Die Vorlesung wird auf Grund einer schriftlichen Prüfung am Semesterende beurteilt;
eventuelle Noten-upgrades aufgrund Übungsengagements möglich.

Teaching methods

Learning by doing.

Testing of hypotheses:
Introduction (alternative and null hypothesis, 1- and 2-sided hypotheses, types of errors, power);
1-sample problems (t-, binomial-test); test of normality (QQ-plot, Shapiro-Wilk-test); 2-sample problems (t-, F-test); sample size calculations (t-test).

Linear regression:
Bivariate normal distribution, Pearson correlation coefficient; simple linear regression (least squares estimation, test on linear relationship, coefficient of determination, regression through the origin, linearization methods); linear calibration functions.

Assessment methods

Written examination

Teaching methods

Lecture with case studies and exercises; accompanying text to lecture, collection of formulae and simulations programs (in R) for downloading.

3 ECTS

Lecture contents

The course gives a broad view across the possibilites of cryptographic methods in a typical workday, especially those of a SysAdmin. For alll subjects, the theoretic background is presented alongside the practical usage implications.

The subjets consist of:

* Hard disk encryption
* SSH & Network tunneling
* E-mail security
* Data encoding using ASN.1
* Public Key Infrastructure

Assessment methods

Exercices and a final exam

Teaching methods

Theoretical lectures and individual tasks for all subjects

Cryptographic Protocols ILV

Lector: DI Dr. Ulrich Haböck

2 SWS
3 ECTS

Lecture contents

This course discusses popular authentication and key agreement protocols and gives an impression of the versatile applicability of modern cryptography.

- Authentication and key establishment protocols: elementary challenge response, zero knowledge proofs, PAKE
- Single Sign On: Kerberos, OpenID Connect
- TLS handshake and its state machine, including known attacks on TLS <=1.2, TLS 1.3

Further topics are chosen at request, e.g. crypto currencies (offline e-Cash, blockchain-based), voting protocols, secret sharing, searchable encryption.

Assessment methods

Final written exam

Teaching methods

Classic whiteboard lectures, exercise classes where appropriate.

Practical Cryptography ILV

Lector: DI Dr. Ulrich Haböck

2 SWS
3 ECTS

Lecture contents

Within the framework of PGP mail encryption, we learn about concrete cryptgraphic algorithms such as padded RSA, DSA, AES, and others, as well as its own public key infrastructure, the WoT.
As excercise, we develop 'TinyPGP", which covers basic functionalities of an OpenPGP compliant software.

Assessment methods

Practical implementation, presentations and code rerview at the end of the semester.

Teaching methods

The first teaching units cover a guideline over GnuPG-usage and the underlying cryptographical concepts. Further units are used for presentations of the groups progress in their programming exercises.
