Research Field Structural Engineering

The Department of Building and Design focuses on the design, measurement and assessment of existing concrete engineering structures. On the one hand, new load-bearing structures made of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete can reach a service life of more than 100 years; on the other hand, existing structures in a poor condition must be reliably assessed and possibly reinforced.

Plan

All methods for the measurement and assessment of existing constructions are based on the principle of sustainability taking into account the life cycle of the constructions.

The research focuses on two main areas: One is based on the development of new construction methods for bridge construction and structural engineering. Thus, new flexible systems are developed for extensive use and researched with improved sustainable materials. The second focus is on existing civil engineering structures that will reach their intended service life in the next few years and which often have to be rebuilt or renovated according to today's standards and norms. In order to effectively intervene in terms of sustainability, the expansion of methods for the examination, recalculation, assessment and improvement of existing engineering structures was implemented as a research field.
