Research Field Construction Economy

The research field Construction Economy and its research goals are defined by the two main research focuses

  • Construction Economy and Contract Management
  • Construction Process Management, Execution of Construction Work and Construction Management

Research Focus

Construction Economy and Contract Management

With alternative thinking and approaches, we show solutions for the growing dynamics and complexity in construction projects and in construction project management. Within the scope of the research field, new approaches, in particular for overcoming uncertainties in the construction process, are discussed and examined for their practical suitability. In order for construction projects to be carried out economically, we examine issues of building management. The subject area extends from structured project management to contract design and the execution of the construction contract all the way to problems in the construction industry.

  • Further development of methods for handling performance deviations in the construction contract
  • Building costing and cost assessment of performance deviations
  • Alternative methods to classical project management in construction
  • Risk management in the construction industry

Construction Process Management, Execution of Construction Work and Construction Management

Time, quality and costs are the most important factors for an economic construction process and form the so-called “magic triangle of construction management”. The aspect of cost reduction is particularly significant within this “magic triangle”. The reduction of costs can be achieved by the prefabrication of components and construction products. This also corresponds to the time and quality aspect, because prefabricated components and structures are manufactured with higher quality. The reason is that they can take place in a control process and thus undergo an improvement process. Prefabrication can also optimize construction time and logistics on construction sites.

In terms of content, this research field specializes in the optimization of construction processes during the construction of building projects.

One aim of this research field is to optimize building processes and to further develop and apply the concepts for factory prefabrication. The costs and duration of the execution of construction measures should be reduced. Prefabrication in the factory increases the quality of workmanship in many areas. This leads to an extension of the lifespan of the constructions with lower life-cycle costs.
