Overview

The goal of this Master's degree program is to maintain or improve the independence and quality of life of people with the aid of technical products, applications and services. Technology, health, therapy, clinical work and research interact in the transfer of basic know-how available in occupational therapy to robotics, or when deploying technical systems to analyze and support sequences of movement. You will develop products, aids, games or systems to assist in enabling ill and disadvantaged people to actively participate in everyday life.

You can see many fields of application in the healthcare sector. Here, you are looking for a Master's degree program which ideally combines both - Technology and Health Assisting Engineering - and advances you professionally. All you still need as a technician is background knowledge in medicine and health and all you need as a health professional is background knowledge of the technology involved. You enjoy communicating with and analyzing the needs of patients. The prospect of innovating from both points of view - as a developer and as a user - is one driving force behind your choice of degree program.

What we offer you

At FH Campus Wien we draw on the knowledge incorporated in more than 60 of our programs to compile innovative degree programs spanning the intersections between disciplines. The concept of Health Assisting Engineering is that of an interdisciplinary Master's degree program. The program merges the two growth areas of Technology and of Health and will continue to develop this interface. Our know-how is in demand already: Our Master's degree program boasts contracts from and collaborations with organizations such as the Austrian Institute of Technology, the Ovos Media GmbH and the Danish Invencon, all of whom are specifically looking for people knowledgeable in this interdisciplinary field. We also cooperate with the Technical and the Medical Universities of Vienna. Interdisciplinary projects are part of our university's research strategy. This offers you the opportunity of participating in interdisciplinary projects. You thereby contribute to the active dialog in the Scientific Community. You are in a position in practice to build on your acquired and scientifically verified know-how. Practical relevance is also guaranteed through our Campus Lecture evenings which are open to all and offer contributions by prominent experts.

What makes this degree program special

Combining know-how in the fields of technology and health is increasingly important in the professional field. Training and further education programs, however, still do not satisfy the actual demand for experts by far. This has occasioned us at FH Campus Wien to combine the disciplines in our institution in a unique way. Researchers, teaching staff and practitioners from several fields of technology and health have jointly structured a new type of Master's degree program. External research facilities, companies, professional associations and patient representatives contributed valuable input to develop a curriculum that is based on needs and state-of-the-art.

The Master's degree program includes current topics such as international trends and visions such as "Smart homes" and "Ambient assisted living". You will create benchmarks for future developments and applications. We are, for instance, working with Ovos Media on a Serious Game for the elderly, which will be used for the prevention and therapy of dementia: "Lebensnetz" is an Android computer game played on a tablet, the theme being the story of the life of the elderly. The game serves to rehash the story of your life. What is special here is that you as a technician or health expert, maybe as an occupational therapist, physiotherapist or health worker and nurse will, jointly with others, develop optimal solutions during your training.


What you will learn in the degree program

  • As a qualified first semester technician or health professional, you will be catching up on the basics of the other disciplines: IT, Physics and Electronics or Health and Illness, including Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene as well as the science of Movement and Action. Both groups support each other here.
  • The focus from the first to the last semester remains on modules with "integrative competency", i.e. comprising topics with components of both technology and health. These include "Quality of life and diversity", "Paradigms of rehabilitation", "Qualitative demand assessment and methods", "Applied science of movement", "Evidence based practice" and "Device concepts".
  • In the third semester, you will choose an elective subject in the areas of Health or Technology. Depending on your choice, you will focus on the science of Action or Movement and on models of health and care or conditions in clinical practice, or on digital signal processing, real-time operating systems, modeling and simulation. You will furthermore participate in an interdisciplinary project, in practical excursions and applied research and development projects.

Concept:
The course is structured according to the didactic concept of blended learning (obligatory online phase => work assignments before, during and after the classroom sessions in individual and/or group work). The tasks of the online phase follow a spiral curricular approach as well as problem-based principles.

This degree program will, as one of few trained experts, position you at the intersection of technology and health. You will support people in their daily life with the aid of technology-assisted diagnosis and therapy systems. You will also learn to apply systems to structure environments to enable disadvantaged people such as the elderly or people with dementia to remain active in their personal environment and also in public. Knowledge of Information Technology and Electronics combined with knowledge on Health Assisting Engineering leads to results oriented exclusively towards the needs of the user. Based on this special focus, the Master's degree program opens up numerous career opportunities such as product developer or manager, consultant, trainer, degree program compiler or coordinator, project manager or scientist, advanced clinical practitioner or hardware/software developer.

Admission

  • Bachelor in Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Information Technology and Telecommunication or Electronics from a national or international university of applied sciences or a university or equivalent qualification
  • Education (Bachelor/Diploma in accordance with the Austrian MTD-Gesetz [Medical Technical Services Act] or equivalent) as an occupational therapist or physiotherapist
  • Bachelor in Health Care and Nursing from a national or internationally recognized university of applied sciences or university
  • Diploma in advanced Health Care and Nursing services, including higher education entrance qualification and verified special achievements (further/special education) after individual tests. You may need to write auxiliary tests.

Bridging Courses

First semester students in technical or structural engineering degree programs have the opportunity of attending special refresher and preparatory courses pertinent to their degree program in subjects such as mathematics, physics, English, electronics, C programming etc. This will facilitate entry into the FH degree program and ensure your success in important degree program subjects.
