Public Transport

Vienna has a good public transport system, enabling people to reach places in Vienna and the surrounding areas easily. During the night, night buses are available.

Semester tickets for students

International students who are younger than 27 years can purchase a semester ticket for EUR 128.50. When purchasing such a semester ticket, students must present the following documents:

• valid student ID for the relevant semester or confirmation of enrolment
• eligibility card for semester ticket (Berechtigungskarte) can only be obtained at the Wiener Linien customer centre.
• valid original residence registration
• application form

Students can buy the semester ticket at any ticket office or in the customer centre of the Wiener Linien.

Monthly tickets for students during the semester

A one-month ticket costs EUR 46 for students younger than 27 years and is advisable if they do not intend to use public transport in Vienna during the whole semester.

Monthly tickets for students during the holidays

This ticket can be bought by students younger than 27 years for EUR 29.50. It entitles to unlimited use of public transport in Vienna for one month during university holidays. Students can get this ticket at any ticket office or in the customer centre of the Wiener Linien.

Austrian federal railways (ÖBB)

Exchange students younger than 26 years can buy a customer card for the Austrian federal railways ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen), which reduces train fares in all of Austria by 50 %. The VORTEILScard < 26 costs EUR 19.90 and is valid for one year after issuance. You need a photograph and a valid official photo ID. The application form is available at every ÖBB ticket counter or can be filled in online on the ÖBB webpage.

Citybikes - Free bicycles

Bicycles can be borrowed from 50 Bike stations across Vienna and can be returned to the same or even a different on. In order to be able to use this offer, a one-off registration - via Internet or directly at the Citybike terminal - is necessary. The registration can be made with a cash card (ATM card) or VISA/MasterCard/JCB credit card. You can also order your own Citybike card.
