Insurance

Personal insurance for students

Voluntary health insurance is required for students who have no Austrian, or EU-member state, statutory health insurance and are living in Austria.
Students and guest researchers from EU/EEA states who have valid statutory health insurance in their homeland require the form E111 (for short-term stays), E128 (for long-term stays) or a European Health Insurance Card issued by their home health authority. In the case of E111 or E128, these must be exchanged for “health insurance vouchers” at the appropriate Austrian health insurance office (e.g. Wiener Gebietskrankenkasse).

Application

The students must apply to the appropriate health insurance carrier in the municipality where he or she is living, (this need not be the same as the principal residence).

Cost

The monthly insurance premium amounts to € 44.58, of which students only have to pay half. The other half is paid by the authorities. The premium is adapted annually.
However, the reduced premium is not available if
  • the student changes degree programme more than twice (a change of studies is not permitted after the third enrolled semester)
  • the overall study exceeds more than four semesters
  • a higher education degree has been completed before the present course (exception: continuative doctorate degree).
In these cases the monthly contribution amounts to € 319.61. However, a request for reduction of the premium can be made.
