Overview of your studies
The eye as the peripheral organ and the central visual system are the main fields of the degree course and the profession. As an orthoptist you will diagnose and treat functional diseases of the eyes such as squint, amblyopia, visual impairment, central visual disorders after trauma and diseases or visual problems caused by working at computer displays.
You will put measures in place in the areas of diagnostics, therapy, prevention and visual rehabilitation and thereby improve the quality of life of people of all age groups. Through your studies you will gain a high level of professional competence as well as the scientific and personal development foundations (required in your career).
The theory that you learn during your degree course will be applied directly in accompanying internships. Apart from your medical-scientific interest, your job as an orthoptist also requires good social skills and high powers of observation.
