As an applicant you can apply on-line for the degree programme within the application period. After completion of the
on-line application form (available in german only)
you will receive an email with all further information relevant to the selection process.
The most important questions about the application:
Until when can I apply?
Application for the academic year 2012/13 runs from 4th October 2011 until 26th March 2012.
Which admission requirements are recognised?
- Higher education entrance qualification: School leaving certificate from a secondary school or a secondary technical school.
- Equivalent foreign certification: the equivalence arises from international-law agreements, validation or in individual cases a decision by the head of the academic section. The German Fachhochschule matriculation standard fulfils the admission requirements for an Austrian Fachhochschule degree programme only if it also entails a relevant vocational qualification.
- “Berufsreifeprüfung” (Secondary School Vocational Certificate) or “Studienberechtigungsprüfung” (Qualification to Study examination) for degree courses in chemistry and pharmacy. This includes "biology level 1", "chemistry level 2", "mathematics level 2" and an essay on a general topic. Institutes, which offer courses for the preparation for the “Studienberechtigungsprüfung” can be found at the “Arbeiterkammer Wien.” (Chamber of Labour)
- Relevant professional qualifications with auxiliary examinations: You will have acquired the professional qualification in the vocational group “Chemistry Technician”, as a “technical specialists - biology technician”, as partial graduates of a technical college, preferably a college of engineering in the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering and food technology.
What do I need for the application?
Send the application form (pdf), which you received per email after the on-line application, along with copies of the following
- Your birth certificate,
- Your proof of nationality,
- Your proof of residence,
- Your general university qualification / your “Studienberechtigungsprüfung” (Qualification to Study examination) / your proof of professional qualification
- if necessary, the certificate of the performed National or Community Service presence, civil service
to our secretary's office.
When does the selection procedure take place?
The written selection test will take place on one of the following dates: 11th, 12th and 13th April 2012.
How does the selection procedure work?
Applicants will be invited to the selection process. The first part is a written exam (approx. 1-hour), which tests your scientific knowledge at Matura-level (A-level) - particularly in human biology (also genetics), chemistry and mathematics as well as logic. After a positive test you will have an interview with the selection committee, where your readiness to learn, your motivation and suitability will be judged.
Can I get credits for courses that I have passed elsewhere?
Students with relevant professional experience (e.g. graduates of a technical college, those who have dropped-out of another degree course) have the possibility of receiving credits for individual courses. A condition for the credit is equivalence of the knowledge to the contents of the course. In case of doubt another auxiliary examination can be taken. The head of the academic section will decide each case on its individual merit after admission to the degree course.
Graduates of the VET (Vocational Educational Training College) for Chemistry/Rosensteingasse in the areas of biochemistry, bio- and gene technology and the Private VET for Food Technology/Hollabrunn, as well as students of the degree programmes molecular biology and biology (genetics/microbiology) at the University of Vienna have the possibility of entering the course directly in the third semester. In this case additional examinations must be passed.
